Come On Guys, I Just Got Home!
I only just got home from travelling through the United States, and apparently, my country was just waiting for my return to go absolutely off the rails!
I'm touched that they held off long enough for me to be at the party.
As I stepped off the bus, the media immediately began discussing the possibility that our Prime Minister would step down as Liberal Party leader and trigger an early election.
And now, on January 6– talk about a fun date in North America– Trudeau has indeed announced his resignation as party leader.
He's still going to be the Prime Minister by the time of Donald Trump's inauguration, meaning that his replacement is going to be coming into their seat with an unstable and unreliable former ally just over the southern border.
This is going to be a rocky few months in Canada, followed by an equally rocky few years as we deal with increasing drama and petty blustering from President Donald Trump who is set to have his victory certified by the end of today.
I haven't even fully recovered from my trip yet, and here I am frantically brushing up on my Canadian political know-how after years of focusing on American politics and government.
I'm not sure if I should be excited or miserable and scared, but I guess I'll have to wait and see what the next few weeks bring forth.
Fingers crossed, guys. Wish us luck.
Solidarity wins.
There's a common joke about Canadian political commentators being laser-focused on the United States and forgetting where we live, and unfortunately, this trend holds.
I'm guilty of it myself. I'm trying to be better about that, especially in the wake of Trump threatening my country's sovereignty and re-awakening my long-slumbering Canadian patriotism.
I've got a basic understanding like any citizen about how our government functions, but I've never done a full deep-dive into Canada's system, political philosophy and history. That's a gap in my knowledge that now needs to be corrected.
If you'd like to join me in learning about Canada's parliamentary system and how our government works, consider picking up a book. Specifically, this one.
