Big news from the United States!
I’ve got friends marching in those protests as we speak. I’m seeing footage and pictures of marches in Georgia, in West Virginia, in Ohio, in Washington D.C. Signs are in the air, fists are raised, and hearts are on fire.
I’m seeing a mass rejection of fascism and the destruction of a once-proud nation.
I’m seeing patriotism.
True patriotism, mind you, not the rabid nationalistic fervour we’ve been seeing from the far right over the past few decades. We’re seeing ordinary Americans standing up to say that enough is fucking enough, and that’s a beautiful thing!
For a while now I’ve been begging American patriots to use their right to protest before it gets taken away, and thank goodness, other people had the same idea. Mass protests like this take time to organise and execute, and it is a serious undertaking that takes a lot of guts, passion and know-how.
And man, have they fucking pulled it off!
The groups involved range from LGBTQ+ advocates to civil rights organisations, to labour unions and veteran groups. They’re all pissed off and rearing to go, standing up against the firings, the economic strife, the threats against the allies of the United States, and the oppression of marginalized people.
They’ve had enough of seeing their democracy be battered and abused like a whipped dog. They’ve had enough of seeing their standing in the world be trashed like a heap of burning tires.
The American people are done.
As a Canadian, I’m so fucking glad to see it.
This is the energy we’ve been craving; this is the storm we’ve been wanting to see sweep the nation and march up to Lafayette Square. This is the attitude we need to see take up space in the country, to really make it clear to the people in charge that their intransigence will not be tolerated.
They’ve been told that the people don’t want what they’re doing, but they don’t care.
They won’t care until they’re forced to accept it.
The point of a democracy is that the people are the true power of the government; it is the people, the average citizens, who truly rule. We call the government workers ‘public servants’ because that’s what they’re supposed to be—servants.
Trump is acting like a fucking King, and that goes against the founding story of the United States.
There’s a quote that is often attributed to Thomas Jefferson: “Where the government fears the people, there is liberty. Where the people fear the government, there is tyranny.”
It’s time for Trump and his sycophantic cronies to be reminded of that fact. The citizens outnumber him, they are not happy, and they believe in the promise of equality and justice and democracy.
This is how the flame of democracy is fed, fanned, and kept alive.
Good work, America. Keep it up.
Solidarity wins.
Hell yes!!! Canada stands with the American citizens who are rising up! Elbows freaking UP!
Trump is playing golf this weekend but he will get right on that come Monday. Will he declare an insurrection and break out the national guard? I'm more concerned with him declaring martial law than anything else right now. Will we mirror South Korea next week?
